A New Milestone in Transnational Teaching: English Major Student from the College Embarks on Summer Teaching in Japan

From July 10 to August 10, 2025, Diego Tsai (蔡丞洋), a student of the Department of English at Wenzao’s College of International Culture, Education, and Foreign Affairs, represented the university at Meisei University in Japan by participating in the one-month Meisei Summer School Program (MSSP). This exchange was made possible through the recommendation of former Department Chair Professor Li-Ying Wu, with Meisei University opening one spot exclusively for an English major student for the first time. Ultimately, Diego was selected. Coincidentally, soon after his selection, Diego also served as a staff member at the College’s International Forum, which was attended by Meisei University faculty members, adding a unique dimension of connection to this collaboration. (See Details)

The MSSP program is designed to provide local elementary school children with opportunities to learn English. What makes the program distinctive is its structure: Meisei University students enrolled in the program are required to serve as teaching assistants, working alongside international students from abroad to guide Japanese children in English learning. While international students were responsible for their own airfare, Meisei University provided accommodation. In addition to Diego from Taiwan, participants included students from Turkey, Georgia, Poland, and Hungary. Together with Meisei students, they co-designed the curriculum and, in the fourth week, entered local elementary schools for hands-on teaching. Though the process was filled with challenges, Diego and his partners not only successfully inspired the children’s enthusiasm for learning and earned strong recognition from parents, but also built friendships that will continue through future exchanges in Taiwan.

Beyond academics, the program offered a holistic experience in both the classroom and daily life. Diego gained deep insights into Japanese culture and significantly improved his language proficiency through the structured program. More importantly, MSSP served as a valuable platform for intercultural exchange, enabling students from diverse countries to broaden their horizons, experience collaborative teaching, and deepen their understanding of mutual respect and connection in today’s global society.

The College extends its special thanks to the faculty of Meisei University and the Reinto Team for their thoughtful support, which ensured that Diego could study and live in Japan with peace of mind. His participation in MSSP not only marked a significant milestone in his personal learning journey but also showcased the College’s continued commitment to advancing students’ international mobility and professional practice with outstanding results.
