On December 2, the College invited Dr. Difeng Chueh, Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at Feng Chia University, to deliver a talk titled “Humanistic and Empathetic Education in the Age of AI.” Dr. Chueh approached the topic through a humanistic perspective, emphasizing that despite the rapid evolution of technology, the essence of education has always been, and will always remain, rooted in people. Understanding students, recognizing their lived experiences, and designing learning that responds to their realities are, in his view, far more important than the tools themselves. He shared how he teaches a first-year AI course by connecting AI concepts with daily life, guiding students to explore ethics through the film Her, using MBTI profiles to introduce prompt engineering, and encouraging them to reflect on invention and problem-solving through everyday objects. He also discussed his department’s curriculum reforms, aiming to shift from “AI as a subject” to “AI as a tool” so that students naturally incorporate technology into their disciplinary learning while maintaining critical thinking and reflective abilities.
In the latter part of the talk, Dr. Chueh shared his approach to recruitment and educational philosophy, grounded in the belief that students should “retain their humanity in the age of AI.” Beyond presenting cross-disciplinary modules and academic resources, he emphasized the importance of recognizing each student’s and family’s unique needs. He encourages students to explore potential career paths, identify the competencies required, and use cross-college coursework to bridge those gaps. During the discussion session, faculty raised questions about students’ over-reliance on AI. Dr. Chueh proposed strategies such as “AI answer-swapping” to prompt deeper thinking, comparison, and questioning rather than passive acceptance of AI-generated responses. The talk, rich in insight and warmth, offered meaningful reflection for educators navigating the transformations brought by AI and provided new perspectives on how education can remain grounded in empathy and human connection.
