On April 8, 2025, the International Affairs, AI, and EMI Synergy faculty community, jointly organized by the College of Culture, Education and External Affairs and the Department of International Affairs, held a sharing session featuring Associate Professor Daniel Lin from the Department of International Affairs. The topic of his talk was Utilizing AI as a Research Assistant for EMI Courses.
Research has always been an essential part of a faculty member’s responsibilities—both conducting their own research and guiding students in theirs. Leveraging AI to assist in research processes can significantly enhance productivity. In his presentation, Professor Lin shared his insights on using AI to support research purpose and literature review headings, while also offering several creative ideas for integrating AI into academic work.
Professor Lin mentioned four key features for using ChatGPT effectively as a research assistant. First, provide a prompt that clearly outlines the context, allowing the AI to better understand the user’s needs. Second, define your role in the research process, as this information helps guide the AI's responses more appropriately. Third, be able to pose specific and focused questions. Lastly, aim for precise outputs when working with ChatGPT.
During the session, participants raised several thought-provoking questions. One in particular sparked lively discussion: “Should we include the word ‘please’ when giving instructions to ChatGPT?” The audience enthusiastically responded, agreeing that since ChatGPT works hard, adding "please" to prompts seems like a courteous and reasonable gesture.
Professor Lin concluded by reminding attendees that a solid foundation in research knowledge is still necessary in order to use ChatGPT effectively as a research assistant. In other words, AI is a helpful tool—but it works best when paired with strong fundamental research knowledge.
國際學院和國際事務系共同合辦之教師社群「International Affairs, AI, and EMI Synergy」於2025年4月8日舉辦分享會,由國際事務系林建宏副教授,以「Utilizing AI as a Research Assistant for EMI courses」為題進行演講分享。
