"Utilizing AI as a Teaching Assistant in EMI Courses"
The faculty community "International Affairs, AI, and EMI Synergy," jointly organized by the College of International Culture, Education, and Foreign Affairs and the Department of International Affairs (DIA), held a sharing session on March 25, 2025, in Room Z406. The event featured Professor Daniel Lin from the DIA at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, who delivered a talk titled "Utilizing AI as a Teaching Assistant in EMI Courses." The discussion focused on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance teaching effectiveness in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses.
Professor Lin highlighted the challenges that traditional teaching methods face in the digital era and emphasized that AI can significantly improve teaching efficiency. He introduced two practical AI tools—ChatGPT and Gamma—and categorized their applications into three main areas: exam question generation, preliminary grading, and the creation of PowerPoint presentations and lecture materials.
Regarding exam question generation, Professor Lin stressed the importance of understanding Bloom's taxonomy, question type distribution, and grading proportions. These elements should be incorporated into ChatGPT prompts to ensure the generated questions are diverse and meaningful. For exam grading, particularly in essay questions, teachers can set evaluation criteria in ChatGPT, such as evidence use, organizational logic, and alignment with assignment requirements, to assist in the initial assessment of student responses. However, Professor Lin emphasized that teachers must review and refine AI-generated feedback to ensure its accuracy and personalization. Additionally, for creating PowerPoint presentations and lecture materials, he suggested using ChatGPT to analyze course materials and generate outlines, which can then be transferred to Gamma to produce visually appealing and modern presentations.
During the session, Professor Lin demonstrated how well-structured ChatGPT prompts enable AI to interpret instructions precisely and deliver the desired results for educators. He also reminded attendees of the importance of removing students' personal information before uploading exam responses to AI tools to safeguard data privacy. The participating faculty members actively engaged in discussions, sharing their experiences with AI in teaching and exploring ways to integrate AI technology into Wenzao's educational framework. The event underscored the potential of AI to drive teaching innovation, diversify instructional methods, and enhance course quality in the digital age.
