“AI and Language Education: Present and Future”
Hosted by Teacher Community of the College, the “113-2 AI-Driven EMI Teaching Community” holds a sharing session on March 6, 2025, in room Z1308. The event features Mr. Kuan-Cheng Wang from the Bilingual Teaching Research Center of Taipei City University, giving a talk titled “The Present and Future of AI in Language Education.”
This talk explores the functions and potential of AI agents in the field of language learning and teaching, with a particular focus on tools named “I Share” and “Lingocraft” and how they reshape traditional education models. The presentation emphasizes the supportive nature of AI rather than its replacement of teachers. AI can build the necessary knowledge structures in seconds, quickly providing learners with personalized content and automatically offering corrections and suggestions to help teachers and students collaboratively create the most suitable language learning models. In this process, teachers’ roles evolve from being mere transmitters of knowledge to becoming facilitators who guide students in building their own language models. Teachers can leverage AI to offer customized advice and assistance based on students' proficiency levels, helping them develop personalized vocabulary banks and English writing structures. This approach enables students to learn English through English thinking rather than translating English into their native language.
AI assistance makes it easier for teachers to design comprehensive course structures. For example, in English writing, AI can support instructors through the stages of introduction, hooks, background information, and articulating clear thesis statements, ensuring content coherence and logical flow. Furthermore, AI can help teachers organize rich, well-rounded teaching materials and enhance course quality. When correcting student essays, AI can adjust suggestions based on the student’s proficiency level, avoiding unnecessarily complex vocabulary. For instance, if a student’s English proficiency falls within A2–B1 levels, teachers can instruct the AI to provide feedback and corrections using language no higher than the B2 level.
Ultimately, this talk guides attendees to a deeper understanding of how AI can become a powerful assistant in education. It will highlight how teachers and students can work hand in hand to create flexible and efficient learning environments, exploring the complementary relationship between AI and human educators to shape a more adaptive and innovative future for education.
