EMI Talk 專題演講 Researching the Lecturer Perspective in EMI

On December 18, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, The College of International Culture, Education, and Foreign Affairs hosted a seminar titled “Researching the Lecturer Perspective in EMI” in Room Z1308, featuring Dr. Reka Ratkaine Jablonkai as the keynote speaker.

The seminar focused on the application and challenges of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in multilingual and multicultural educational settings. It attracted numerous faculty members, highlighting the significance of EMI in higher education. Dr. Jablonkai began by discussing the importance of EMI in advancing internationalization in higher education, emphasizing its role in enhancing students' English proficiency and fostering intercultural understanding. However, she also pointed out key challenges such as gaps in instructors’ language skills, pedagogical knowledge, and discrepancies between policies and practical implementation.

In terms of teaching strategies, Dr. Jablonkai introduced the application of student-centered and culturally responsive teaching methods. She advocated for incorporating group discussions, problem-based learning, and multimodal resources into classrooms to enhance student engagement and promote cross-cultural interaction. Additionally, she highlighted the innovative use of technology, such as artificial intelligence and corpus linguistics, for teaching evaluation and classroom interaction analysis.

Regarding professional development, Dr. Jablonkai suggested strengthening instructors' language proficiency and intercultural communication skills. She also recommended incorporating situational intelligence and project management courses into curriculum design to develop students' adaptability and comprehensive competencies. Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of establishing supportive platforms to provide continuous professional support for instructors working in EMI environments.

Following the seminar, Dr. Jablonkai engaged in a lively discussion with participants, addressing topics such as curriculum design, student learning support, and the cultural adaptation of international students. She offered practical recommendations that not only provided actionable insights for participants but also addressed critical challenges in EMI teaching. The seminar inspired attendees with new perspectives and served as a powerful driving force for advancing the college’s internationalized teaching efforts.
