On November 22, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, the College hosted a special lecture titled “EMI, Global Talent Development, and Higher Education: Strengths, Strategies, and Organizational Restructuring for Taiwan’s Universities” in Room Z1308, with Professor Chao-Ming Chen as the keynote speaker. The event was attended by our President Hui-Ling Chuang, Vice President Chu-Hsiung Lin, and Vice President Chi-Yen Shen of I-Shou University, underscoring the importance of the lecture.
During his presentation, Professor Chen emphasized the profound impact of AI on language education, highlighting the need for substantial reform in traditional teaching methods. He questioned the current overemphasis on linguistic precision, arguing that communication skills should be prioritized as the primary goal of language learning. He proposed integrating more practical and creative elements into curriculum design, such as establishing courses—or even programs—focused on performing skills in the humanities. These courses would allow students to develop interdisciplinary skills through task-based discussions and performances. Additionally, Professor Chen advocated for streamlining course structures by reducing unnecessary credit requirements and introducing concentration courses that encourage students to allocate more time to independent learning and practical experiences, better preparing them for the dynamic demands of future workplaces.
Following the lecture, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Professor Chen engaged in a focused discussion with the heads of the Department of Translation, the LDDC, the College’s academic advisors, and the Dean in Room Z506. He offered specific recommendations on higher education curriculum planning. These included incorporating Situational Intelligence and project management courses to enhance students’ decision-making and adaptability in diverse contexts. He also supported the idea of allowing students to take other foreign languages to substitute for university English credits, thereby broadening their linguistic depth and cultural understanding. For professional courses, Professor Chen suggested integrating at least one certification or license as an assessment standard to ensure a stronger connection between academic training and career development. Furthermore, he underscored the importance of industry collaboration, recommending that each class include at least one corporate mentor-led seminar per semester to provide students with practical insights into industry practices.
Professor Chen’s insights not only offered innovative directions for curriculum design but also provided valuable guidance for course organization and student career development. His contributions have injected new energy and inspiration into advancing diversified education for the future.
