The Most special Taiwanese customs of Lantern Festival and Chinese New Year

The Lantern Festival is the first "full moon" day after the Chinese New Year, celebrated with activities such as eating sweet rice dumplings, admiring lanterns, and solving lantern riddles. Legend has it that, to avoid disasters, the daughter of the Jade Emperor suggested hanging lanterns and setting off fireworks from the 14th to the 16th day of the first lunar month, successfully averting calamities. Taiwan has unique events like releasing sky lanterns in the north, firecracker battles in the south, and the "Han Dan" festival in the east. Eating sweet rice dumplings symbolizes family reunion, lantern viewing originates from the tradition of deceiving the Jade Emperor, and solving lantern riddles stems from an ancient legend.

Chinese New Year in Taiwan involves various traditional customs, including the reunion dinner, putting up spring couplets, giving red envelopes, competing for the first incense, and paying respects during temple visits. The celebration traces back to the ritual by Emperor Shun to worship heaven and earth, later designated as the Spring Festival, symbolizing gratitude to deities and ancestors. Customs include wearing red clothing, hanging spring couplets, having a reunion dinner, giving and receiving red envelopes, and unique activities on different days, such as the New Year's Day parade, visiting the maternal family on the second day, and welcoming the God of Wealth on the fifth day. Shopping in bustling New Year markets, thorough house cleaning, and the joyous reunion dinner are all integral traditions of the Taiwanese Lunar New Year. We hope that people in Taiwan can ensure healthy lives and wellness by connecting these local customs with the third goal of SDG “Good Health & Well-being”.
