Would you like a bowl of Laba Congee on the coldest days?

Do you know about a festival called the Laba Festival? It's celebrated in the last month of the lunar calendar, marking the beginning of the Chinese New Year. 'La' means the twelfth month in Chinese lunar calendar, and 'ba' means eight. Since this festival is celebrated on the eighth day of the last month, it's called 'Laba.'

The tradition of eating Laba Congee has been followed by most Chinese people for a long time during the Laba Festival. This festival usually falls in mid-January of the Gregorian calendar and is considered the coldest day of the year, so having this sweet dish is customary. Laba Congee has eight ingredients glutinous rice, red beans, walnuts, peanuts, and more.

Additionally, there's an ancient legend that Buddha attained enlightenment under a Bodhi tree on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. During six years of ascetic practices, he ate only grains, and in remembrance of his sacrifices, people ate Laba Congee at every Laba Festival. Let's cherish our food and remember to strive together for global sustainability and the goal of 'Zero Hunger' as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)!
