What is the unique way to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in Taiwan?

The Mid-Autumn Festival traditionally falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. It is called the Mid-Autumn Festival because it falls in the middle of the three months of autumn. It celebrates the full moon and is considered a symbol of reunion. This year, it falls on September 29th in the Gregorian calendar. The common customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival include family members having dinner together, sharing mooncakes, eating pomelos, admiring the moon, barbecuing, and carrying lanterns.

In Taiwan, barbecue has become a way of celebration. We can’t call it a perfect Moon Festival without having a barbecue. The reason is very interesting. At that time, a Taiwanese company launched a new barbecue sauce and released an advertisement with a catchy slogan: When one family grills, ten thousand families smell the aroma. With the captivating line spread like wildfire, the company convinced Taiwanese people that barbecuing is a must-do for the Moon Festival.

Taiwan's Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations may vary between different regions and families. In addition to traditional moon-viewing, mooncake-tasting, and other rituals, barbecue has become a unique celebration in Taiwan to add to the fun and joyful atmosphere. These activities also reflect the diversity and vitality of Taiwanese culture.
