Although I have never experienced Diwali, what I want to share today is the "Lantern Festival", a traditional Chinese festival. Also a festival that emphasizes lights, family, and tradition, the Lantern Festival is popular in most areas with Chinese background cultures. The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month every year, which coincides with the first full moon of the Lunar New Year. At the same time, the Lantern Festival also symbolizes the arrival of spring. On this day we usually eat Yuanxiao (now glutinous rice balls), guess lantern riddles, watch lanterns, etc. I remember when I was a child, our family would go to the lantern festival together during the Lantern Festival. My brother and I would hold lanterns in our hands and walk in gardens and parks. To me, it was a beautiful festival full of meaning and memories.

I haven't participated in Diwali, but a similar festival in Taiwan is the Lantern Festival. It marks the end of the Lunar New Year. Then, I usually celebrate it with my grandma every year in Chiayi. My neighbors on that day will light beautiful lanterns that symbolize hope and peace, and release them into the sky. Moreover, my family also gather to enjoy cuisine and watch parades with Dragon&Lion dances. At that night, the sky will fill with glowing lights, creating a joyful atmosphere, like Diwali. Hence, I look forward to every evening of the Lantern Festival. All in all, both festivals emphasize light, family, and positive traditions.

Burgfeuer: A Tradition of Light and Unity in the Eifel Region

While I haven’t had the chance to experience Diwali, I have participated in a similar cultural festival called Burgfeuer, celebrated in the villages of the Eifel region in East Belgium. This ancient tradition, rooted in Celtic customs, takes place on the first weekend of Lent. The bonfire symbolizes the act of driving away winter and evil spirits while also welcoming the arrival of spring.

The village youth take the lead in gathering materials from the community, such as old Christmas trees and straw bales, to build a massive pyre. In the past, items like old tires and engine oil were added, but modern environmental concerns have put an end to this practice. The bonfire creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere for families and the community despite the cold weather.

In earlier times, villagers would stay up overnight to guard the pyre, ensuring it wasn’t lit prematurely by neighboring village youths. While this tradition has mostly faded, the essence of Burgfeuer—collecting materials and lighting the fire—remains a beloved part of the region's heritage.

Burgfeuer continues to symbolize resilience and unity as the community transitions from winter to spring, much like other festivals of light that celebrate togetherness and renewal.
